Celestron SkyScout is Offical Product of the International Year of Astronomy 2009

On November 5, 2008, Celestron announced SkyScout Personal Planetarium 93970 as the official product of the 2009 Internal Year of Astronomy (IYA2009). “Celestron’s SkyScout is a must-have tool for astronomy beginners. Its high-quality features and educational value make it the perfect instrument to explore the sky during 2009, the International Year of Astronomy.” said Pedro Russo, International Year of Astronomy Coordinator. The IYA2009 is a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society. Highlighted by the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s first use of an astronomical telescope, the 2009 International Year of Astronomy aims to inspire worldwide interest in astronomy and science.

The IYA2009 activities will take place under the theme “The Universe, Yours to Discover” at the global, regional, national and local levels. National groups have been formed in each country to plan activities for 2009 and to foster collaborations between professional and amateur astronomers, science centers and science communicators. Each country will be responsible for its own initiatives and to assess national needs. The United States IYA2009 team states, “This will be modern astronomy’s quadricentennial; the 2009 Year of Astronomy will be an international celebration of numerous astronomical and scientific milestones.” The goal of the US IYA program is to offer an engaging astronomy experience to every person in the country, to nurture existing partnerships and to build new connections to sustain public interest in astronomy.

The Sky Scout Personal Planetarium from Celestron is a consumer-friendly celestial object locater. Identifying over 50,000 space objects, the SkyScout weighs only 16 ounces and utilizes point and shoot GPS technology.
